Coffee Klatch

Monday, February 6, 9:30-10:30.

Come enjoy a cup of coffee (or tea!) and something sweet to nibble while we share the books we have been reading and Laura book talks some of the new books in the library.  Find out what other people are reading and recommending and maybe discover a new title or two.


Thursday Evening Book Club

Discussing a good book and eating a snack. Life just doesn’t get much better.  Everyone is welcome. Pick up a copy of the book at the library. Bring a snack to share if you wish.

Thursday,  February 23, 6:30-8:00. In February we are reading Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly.  Copies of the book are available at the library.  Please join us!

Book T.A.L.K.

Talk About Literature in Kansas is a program for every Kansan who loves to read and discuss good books. All  copies of the books are available at the library. Monthly book talks are led by Kansas Humanities discussion leaders.

Our Spring series is “Living with the Land.”  We’ll read four books on this subject.

(The discussion over The Good Earth has been rescheduled to Friday, April 6th at 2:00 p.m.) Our first book is The Good Earth by Pearl S Buck.  Copies of the book are available at the library.  Pick up your copy at the library and join our lively, interesting discussion.

Knitting Classes – Susan Weston (chief yarn wrangler) will be teaching her popular knitting classes again this winter.  For the very beginning student through advanced.  Each class is $1.00. Please bring your own knitting needles.

Camera Workshop -  Wayne Rhodus, nature and publication photographer will be offering a series of camera workshops to help you become the photographer you want to be.  Each class is $10 and must be registered for separately.  Sign up HERE.

Tuesday, February 7 (This class is full) & Tuesday, February 28 (This class is full) – “Getting to Know Your Digital Camera” – Did you get a new camera for the holidays? Never quite mastered your old one? Wayne will step you through the basic camera controls and features. Get off auto and discover what you and your camera can do.

Tuesday, February 21  (This class is full)  – “Steady as She Goes” – Learn basic hand holding tips and techniques for point and shoot cameras.

Tuesday, March 6 (This class is full)  – “Sharp Dressed Image” – Making sharp (in focus) images. Wayne will cover setting the shutter speed and aperture on your camera to get sharp, in focus images.

Tuesday, March 20 (This class is full) – “I’m ready for my closeup, Mr. DeMille.” Select the right camera mode for portraits and learn some basic tips for making closeup shots.

Tuesday, April 3 – “Arranging the Pieces” – Learn how to arrange the subjects in your images. Wayne will cover basic compositional considerations including the Rule of Thirds and selecting a good background.

Tuesday, April 17 – “The Glorious Landscape” – Learn how to capture that beautiful nature scene. Wayne will cover “seeing the light” (light quality, direction, intensity) and cover basic metering techniques.

Computer Classes

The library offers a variety of computer classes. All the classes are free, but registration is required. Call the library to register  (913) 724-2828.

In February we are offering two computer classes:
Introduction to the Computer (Monday, February 13, 9:30-11:00)  – This class is for anyone with little or no experience with the computer.

Searching and Using the Internet (Friday, February 24, 9:30-11:00) – How to access the internet and the wonders, and dangers, you will find there.

You can also find computer lessons (& a whole lot more!) on Learning Express, an educational website brought to you by the State Library of Kansas.  To access the site, go to the library’s home page and click on Learning Express under Library Services.

 

Exercise Classes

Yoga – Monday mornings, 9:30-10:30.  The instructor, Melody Miller is trained in Bikram, Ashtanga and Classical Yoga. Please bring a yoga mat, block and strap. 6 sessions for $60.00. Sign-up here!

PiYo – Thursday evenings, 6:30-7:30.  Led by Cindy Grover, PiYo is a mix of Pilates and yoga helping you develop strength, flexibility and dynamic balance.  Up-tempo, non-spiritual approach to mind/body exercise. Please bring a yoga mat.  10 class punch card for $45.oo  or  $5.oo per class.
