Kevin Manning, Astrophysicist, will be here at the library presenting a fascinating program for all ages about the worlds beyond our own. The evening will include an incredible video, hands-on activities and then we’ll go outside with the telescope. Cross your fingers for a cloudless night! Help us kick off Summer Reading with a celestial evening.

Spreading the love of reading, person to person

Monday, April 23rd was World Book Night, an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books. Held in the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland, tens of thousands of people went out into their communities to spread the joy and love by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks. Laura Carroll, Adult Service Librarian,  distributed 40 copies of two of her favorite books at Kelley’s Bar and Grille. For more information on WBN, check out the website: www.worldbooknight.org.

What has happened to us?

Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.

• Two out of every three of us are overweight.
• About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug
• Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to battle these very conditions.

Could it be there’s a single solution to all of these problems?

The documentary Forks Over Knives examines a profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called “diseases of affluence” that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods and eating a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Join us for a screening of the movie at 6pm.

After the film, Caryl Lombard, Nutrition Educator/Coach certified by The Wellness Forum, will lead a discussion over the film, including ways to change your health through improved diet and lifestyle habits.

Samples of food from the Forks Over Knives cookbook will be available for tasting!

Senator Tom Holland (D-3rd District) will be meeting with constituents here at the library Saturday, February 4th. This will be a come and go event and your chance to speak with the Senator personally. Senator Holland represents the 3rd District which includes the city of Basehor.

We love birds!  So in honor of National Bird Feeding Month, we are making bird feeders that Kindergarten-5th Graders can make and take home to feed their birds.  Registration required.

Please note:  Peanut Butter will be used with this craft.

All classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, 6:00-7:30 p.m.  Each class is $10 and you must register for each class separately.

Interested in writing your memoirs, family history, poetry or other kinds of creative writing? Then join us at the library on Monday evenings 6:30-7:30pm September 19 through October 24. This is an informal group facilitated by one of the participants and all writing levels are encouraged to attend. Please call Jenne at the library for more information 913.724.2828. It’s going to take awhile to get this relationship figured out. Here’s what we can do in the meantime. Librarians have come up with a long list of websites with FREE ebooks. We share that list with you here.

Many of the links for ebooks from Project Gutenberg have been added to the NExpress catalog. You can search for them by using the phrase “electronic resource ebook.” Project Gutenberg provides some pretty good advice for downloading, not only from their website but just the process in general, here.

At BCL, we’re doing our best to figure out how we can best build our relationship with ebooks in order to serve you the best way possible. Please help us by participating in our short survey.

We started our celebration at Dairy Days in June (see our pictures).

Now we’re continuing the campaign inside the library with Geek posters of your friends and neighbors—and maybe even you! Come in and see what others geek, and tell us what you care about. No matter what you geek, the Library supports you!
